Beshalach
A recurring dilemma for every leader or teacher is always the same, how can one message, one idea be acceptable and resonate with a diverse audience. In our Parsha, as the Jewish People faced the threat of the Egyptian pursuit to their rear and the sea ahead, this is the very challenge Moshe faced.
With strong emotions and opinions ranging from those who wished to fight the Egyptians- seemingly noble, to outright surrender - return to Egypt. How could Moshe address them all at once? How can one set of instructions suffice?
The Lubavitcher Rebbe explains, how in G‑d's words to Moshe, we find the answer to our question, not only then but even today. G‑d tells Moshe, "Speak to the Jewish People and journey forward." (Shemot 14:9)
The common ground between all different social and political groups is they represent the approach on their own estimation of values and ideals.
"Journey forward," tells us that in looking for the right solution, we need to examine our predicament, in how it relates to our fulfillment of our mission from G‑d.
Every party or agenda, however noble it is, will always be limited to it's priorities. Only by searching for G‑d's wishes, as indicated by the teachings of the Torah and the Mitzvot, can we properly move forward.
In this light, when we move forward, it is not because Pharaoh is behind us and chasing us, but rather, due to our important mission ahead.
Shabbat Shalom!
Portuguese Jewish history is a rich tapestry of accomplishment and challenge spanning the centuries. Portugal's shores have produced and housed some of our greatest Rabbis and leaders. From statesman, leader and scholar Rabbi Don Yitzchak Abarbanel to Shulchan Aruch author Rabbi Yosef Karo in the 15th century through to the Lubavitcher Rebbe's time in Lisbon in 1941, Portugal has enabled tremendous developments in strengthening community and Torah.
It is in recognition of the timeless nature of these commitments, and in honor of all of those Jews who have called Portugal home through times of brilliance and darkness, that these Torah insight's from Portugal's great Rabbis is produced - here in Portugal.
Special thanks to Rabbi Shlomo Pereira for the Portuguese translation.
